The hymn that we sing is largely the same as Toplady composed it. Julian tells us that the text was often altered (probably by editors of hymnbooks to fit their own doctrinal emphases). However, the hymn as we sing it today is by and large the same as written by Toplady.

Thomas Hastings was an American composer, primarily an author of hymn tunes of which the best known is "Toplady" for the hymn Rock of Ages. He was born to Dr. Seth and Eunice Hastings in Washington, Connecticut. He was a 3rd great-grandson of Thomas Hastings who came from the East Anglia region of England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634.

Though he reluctantly included his own hymns, he was forthcoming with his thoughts about the use of hymns or spiritual song in worship. And in The Gospel magazine, Toplady offered this caution to fellow hymn-writers: “God is the God of truth, of holiness, and of elegance. As Toplady himself defined it in a collection of ‘Psalms and Hymns for Public and Private Worship’ (published in 1776), this particular hymn is intended to speak about ‘Assurance of Faith’. Augustus Toplady lived in a day when the truths expressed in the above hymn were more readily believed by many in the Church of England, and by Augustus Toplady was an eighteenth century Anglican preacher and poet, best known for his famous hymn “Rock of Ages.” J. C. Ryle called him a man "strangely compounded, peculiarly constituted, and oddly framed," but also a man of rare grace and gifts and one who left his mark very deeply on his own generation.
